The Situation

During seminary, Cara realized a gap in how the Western church teaches women's history and the role of female leaders. From Christianity’s earliest days, women have served as priests, influencers, and trailblazers, yet their contributions are often forgotten. Today, many evangelical churches, unaware of these historical mentors, continue to silence women or confine them to women-only spaces despite their gifts in teaching and leadership. Recognizing this dissonance, Cara launched the Know Your Mothers project to bridge the gap in historical and biblical knowledge and empower women today to step into their gifts and develop them despite the judgment they may encounter in church spaces.

The Solution

Cara reimagined portraits of historical women, drawing inspiration from the Eastern church’s tradition of icon "writing," where sacred images serve as portals to the divine. Using modern color, design, and relatable faces, she created over 70 contemporary icons. What began as an Instagram account and blog quickly gained traction among diverse Christian audiences. She soon developed a daily iPhone app featuring Bible studies, artwork, audio content, and downloadable imagery, making these stories even more accessible. Expanding further, she launched a website offering merchandise and study materials, equipping ministers worldwide with content to use in their own spiritual spaces and communities.
